Government to Extend $1,600 home insulation program to renters

Officially launched on the 1st July 2009, the ‘Energy Efficient Homes Package’entitled homeowners to $1600 of free home insulation.  Insulation properties and rental units were also given access to a reduced amount of $1000 of free insulation.

After a lukewarm reception to the $1,000 available to rental properties, the Federal Government has now announced that from the 1st September 2009, landlords and tenants will now be eligible for the full $1600 worth of free ceiling insulation.

Previously only available to Home Owners, the $1600 is enough to cover approximately 100m2 of roof area completely free of charge.

To be eligible for the rebate, the property must have either no or ineffective insulation to meet the criteria. If you’re not sure exactly what’s in your roof, your local registered installer should be willing to come over and check out how your roof measures up.  Any reputable installer will provide this service free of charge and If they are unwilling to come over first to give you a free quote, then its unlikely that they are the kind of reputable installer you would want fitting insulation in your roof.

If you haven’t already got your free roof insulation then you maybe wondering exactly how getting it installed will benefit you in the short and long term.  Here’s a few basic reasons why you would be crazy not to get your insulation fitted now, while the government is still willing to whole or large proportion of the cost:

Approximately 40% of heat in the home is lost through the roof.  This staggering figure is costing Australians millions of dollars every year in heating and cooling bills.  Installing roof insulation is the most cost effective way to reduce these costs.  In fact, with roof insulation correctly installed, the average home will save over $300 every year on heating costs alone.

By installing insulation you are also making a conscious effort to protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gases.  Amazingly, just by fitting ceiling insulation, you are automatically bringing your home up to a 2 star energy rating.

Insulation will keep your home quieter.  That’s right, a well-insulated building can "envelope" your living space, making it quieter by blocking outdoor noise sources.
